Question 1

How do you trace a leak when the water inside doesn't match the damage outside?

Accepted Answer

Water almost never drips straight down from where it breaches the roof; it tracks along rafters, runs down the underlay, and pools above ceiling joists before soaking through your plasterboard. We inspect the loft with torches to trace moisture trails and white water-staining on the timbers, matching those marks against tears in the felt or slipped tiles outside. Once we pin down the true entry point, we patch the underlay and replace any damaged tiles so the water track is cut off at the source.

Question 2

Can you replace broken roof slates or tiles without cracking the ones around them?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we use a specialist tool called a slate ripper to hook and shear the fixing nails underneath the broken slate without disturbing the sound slates above it. For interlocking clay or concrete tiles, we carefully lever up the overlapping course with timber wedges to free the broken unit and hook an exact-match replacement onto the roof batten. If the old slate nail holes are damaged, we secure the replacement firmly using a discrete copper tingle wrapped over the bottom edge.

Question 3

Why are my ridge tiles coming loose along the roofline?

Accepted Answer

Traditional sand-and-cement mortar breaks down over decades of freeze-thaw cycles and heavy wind driven across Leicestershire, causing it to crack, crumble, and lose its grip. When that happens, we lift the loose ridge caps, chop out the decayed mortar back to the tile line, and re-bed them on a fresh sand-and-cement mix with mechanical hip irons where needed. If the mortar line has failed repeatedly, we can also upgrade the ridge to a dry-fix system that screws directly into the roof timbers without any wet mortar.

Question 4

What do you do if my roof starts leaking during heavy rain and high winds?

Accepted Answer

When weather makes it unsafe to lay wet mortar or carry out extensive strip-downs, we focus on rapid weatherproofing to stop water ruining your ceilings and electrics. We secure heavy-duty tarpaulins across the damaged section, weighting or battening them down, or apply emergency all-weather waterproof compounds directly over splits. As soon as the wind drops and the roof surface dries, we come back to complete the permanent tile, slate, or lead repair.

Question 5

How do you repair a leaking lead valley without ripping out the whole roof?

Accepted Answer

If the lead has a small hairline split caused by seasonal expansion, we can often carry out a lead-weld repair by dressing the metal flat and fusing a fresh lead patch over the tear with a welding torch. If the lead has degraded along its entire length or is too thin to weld, we lift the cut tiles on either side of the valley to expose the boards. We then strip out the damaged section and fit fresh Code 4 lead, ensuring each sheet has the correct overlap and is properly clipped against the wind.

Question 6

What causes tiles to slip out of line and slide into the gutters?

Accepted Answer

Tiles and slates slip when old steel nails rust through over time—often known as nail rot—or when the hanging nibs on the back of older clay tiles break off during winter frosts. When we attend, we clear the loose pieces, check that the timber battens beneath haven't rotted from damp, and re-fix the displaced units. If tiles are broken beyond reuse, we source matching reclaimed or concrete profiles to fit the gap and fasten them with non-corrosive aluminium or copper fixings.
